Guidelines about a Bomb Threat Call


In many countries terrorists and other extremist groups have resorted to bombing attacks to publicize their objectives, political or otherwise. Some of these groups are concerned with domestic issues; others operate on the international stage. Some seek to target particular organizations or individuals; others are more indiscriminate in their targeting. It is important to keep the threat in perspective. Terrorist incidents and other extremist activity attract considerable publicity but for most people it is something they hear about on the news. However there is always the possibility of being ‘in the wrong place at the wrong time’ and being caught up in an incident; receiving a telephone warning that a bomb has been placed; being evacuated from an area where it is suspected a bomb is placed or, being in the vicinity of an explosion. This now has universal application.

General Information:

  • It is very rare that a bomb threat will yield a bomb. It is very rare that bombing is preceded by a threat.
  • Bombs can be constructed to look like almost anything. It is improbable that a bomb will look like a bomb
  • If at all device is placed it will be placed carefully but not elaborately concealed.

Threat Delivery:

Most common method of sending a bomb threat is by a telephone call. Very rarely it will be delivered by a note.

What to do?

  • In case you do get a bomb threat on your telephone (Cell / land line) please treat that as real.
  • Do not take the call as a hoax call till the time it is proved otherwise.
  • Do not panic and/ or run, wait for instructions from your team leader or person in-charge.
  • Do not discuss the threat with the fellow employee, inform personally to the security / senior manager at site or his / her delegate.
  • While you take the call please keep as much information as possible, in your mind about the caller as you can. Take notes.
  • Evacuate only if advised by your team leader and/ or in an orderly fashion as per procedure.
  • Do not touch or pick anything while you evacuate.
